LOWER BACK PAIN :

Today, one of the most common health problems is LOWER BACK PAIN .

According to the WHO ( WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION ) :

In 2020, low back pain (LBP) affected 619 million people globally, and it is estimated that the number of cases will increase to 843 million by 2050, driven largely by population growth and ageing.

According to THE INDIAN EXPRESS - JOURNALISM OF COURAGE :

A Study found 87.5 million low back pain cases in India; doctors say surgery is not the only solution .

So, you are not alone who carries a painful back. We understand that painful back can become a burden in your daily life, and ignoring the initial pain ( acute pain ) may allow the condition to become more severe or persistent.

EARLY SIGNS : What you shouldn't ignore -

  • Low back pain can be a dull or a sharp pain . It may be localized to the lower back or may radiate into one or both legs.

  • In most cases of ACUTE LBP, symptoms subsides on their own and most people recover well. However, for some people the symptoms may persist and develop into CHRONIC PAIN .

  • LBP can be Acute ( persists less than 6 weeks ) , Sub-acute ( persists 6-12 weeks ), or Chronic ( more than 12 weeks ) .

  • LBP can restrict person's mobility , affects their day to day lifestyle. It can also affects the mood , stress level, sleep & overall quality of life.

ROOT CAUSES :

  • Prolapsed Inter-Vertebral Disc ( PIVD ) : When inter-vertebral disc bulges out from the space between two consecutive vertebra , it irritates spinal roots ( compress nerve roots in spinal cord ) . So, that irritation originates a radiating pain through legs ( unilateral or bilateral ) .

  • Spondylosis : It is an age related degenerative disorder. The degenerative process in osteoarthritis affects the vertebral bodies, neural canal and facet joints. If severe, it may cause pressure on the spinal cord which can leads to sensory-motor disturbances like pain, weakness, imbalance also paresthesia.

  • Spondylolisthesis : It is a very painful condition when a high velocity force hits your spine or you fall from a height , one vertebra gets displaced over another vertebra . It is very fatal condition one can face. It may be anterior-listhesis or posterior-listhesis.

  • Spondylitis : It is an inflammatory disorder that affects spine. Ankylosing Spondylitis is one example of spondylitis which affects your back. Initially you can feel localized pain in your lower back.

  • Spondylolysis : It is mainly a stress fracture of spinal body-Pars interarticularis. It breaks the arch of your spine, Causing pain and tenderness .

  • Piriformis syndrome : A small pear shaped muscle named, PIRIFORMIS present in our glutes area. When it becomes stiff or tight, it generally compresses the Sciatic nerve . You can feel tightness on your lower back and radiating pain through your legs .

HERE IS SOME HOME EXERCISES WHICH MAY REDUCE YOUR DISCOMFORT :

  • CORE STRENGTHENING : Core muscles have very important role in holding your back. So, it is very important to strengthen them.

    Hold those positions for 5-10 sec and repeat it for 5-10 times.

  • PELVIC BRIDGING : This exercises helps to strengthen your extensors of spine.

    Hold this bridge position for 5-10 counts and repeat it for 5-10 times.

  • SPINAL EXTENSION : This exercise helps to localized your radiating pain .

    Hold this position for 5-10 sec and repeat it for 5-10 times.

  • PIRIFORMIS STRETCHING : This stretching lets your compressed sciatic nerve breath.

    Hold this stretched position for 20 sec and repeat it for 5 times.

  • PARASPINAL STRENGTHENING : These muscles hold the standing or sitting posture. So, strengthening is important .

    Hold this position for 5-10 sec and repeat it for 5-10 times.

  • SPINAL ROTATIONS : Helps to stretch tight paraspinal muscles. Which relives your back.

    Do it 10 times on each side.

  • HAMSTRING STRETCHING : It helps to reduce posterior-chain tightness.

    Hold this stretched position for 20 sec and repeat it for 5 times.
